Head lice are difficult to remove because of their size, reinfestation rate, life cycle, and their ability to develop immunity to insecticides. Wet combing, or 'bug-busting' is used to remove lice without using chemical treatments. Medicated lotions and liquid are also effective. It is important to apply the preparation according to the instructions, and remove the lice and eggs with a fine-toothed nit comb. There are two main types of lotions; insecticide lotions such as derbac and full marks lotion, these are very effective however resistance is increasing. Dimethicone treatment eg hedrin, works differently and is claimed to be effective in 7 out of 10 cases and is less toxic than insecticides.
